Law centre & money advice
What we offer - a chance to see the operations of a busy Centre, shadowing both Solicitors and Money Advisors in their casework, and carrying out research.
What you can offer - after agreeing the scope of your volunteering (hours available and specific interests) you will contribute to the work of the Centre by carrying out specific tasks - you will bring specialist knowledge of your own and enthusiasm.
Support - after an initial introductory period, you will be assigned a member of staff who will advise on work undertaken and monitor progress.
A day in the life of
a volunteer
I have been volunteering with the Law and Money Advice Project for the past four months and combine my volunteer work with studying for a law degree. I work at DLMAC for a day per week and have become involved in working with both the solicitors and the Money advisors in the Project.
A typical day at DLMAC will involve shadowing the advisors during client appointments. I am particularly interested in disability issues and, having received some training, will be assisting clients with claims to Disability Benefits. I have also had the opportunity to attend appeal hearings to observe the workings of Appeal Tribunals when dealing with Disability Benefits Appeals.
My involvement also includes supporting the work of solicitors and advisors through researching legal issues and also researching caselaw for Social Security Appeals.
I have enjoyed my time at DLMAC and have found that the experience I have gained has been helpful in adding a practical perspective to my legal studies.
